I noticed how the Create pickings process is so diffirent when it is called from a warehouse shipment than when it is called from the picking worksheet line.
It makes sense, since the picking worksheet allows you to mix shipments to create pickings combining lines from all of them.
But, I found some functionalities that are available when we create pickings from the worksheet that are not on available when we create the picking from the shipment card, in my opinion, with no reason: Create per bin and Create per Zone.
I don’t think I have ever needed the option to create pickings per bin (actually I can’t imagine a situation where this makes sense ?) but I think it is usefull to split the shipment into separate pickings by zone. For example, when the shipment can be picked by different warehouse workers assigned at separate zones at the same time.
Why this option is not available when creating pickings from warehouse shipment? I think it would be a nice feature to be included on the Business Central Base.
While playing around with pickings, I also noticed the low importance of the Special Equipment Code field. The aim of this field is to define the special equipment the warehouse worker needs to move the item from one side the other one. For example, security equipment, forklift, exoskeleton, ? etc.
The Special Equipment Code can be defined by item/SKU or can be defined by bin:
OK. But which of them prevail? Well, this is something than can be setup on the Location card:
If you don’t set this setup, the picking lines are created with an empty value on this field:
However, when this field is setup, this field is populated based on the defined prevalence:
That’s all about I could find about special equipments. Going forward, nothing happens. And this is something I don’t like. This field is not printed on the picking document and there is no option to split shipments on separate pickings based on the Special Equipment Code either ?.
So, what actually happens with this field on the real live, is that it is not used. To make something similar, what many companies do is to split their warehouse on BC’s Zones based on the Special Equipment Code needed, since as we saw before, there is an option to split shipments by zone.
I’m planning to buid a small extension to allow you to split pickings base on zones and based on special equipments. As soon as I have it ready, I’ll share it on here ?.
